…And the Bride Wore White

27 Jan
Las Vegas is known for its strip clubs, nightclubs, gambling, and of course, weddings! A whopping 120,000 people get married in this city annually. Since marriage is “in” for 2011 and the Las Vegas Bridal Expo is this Sunday, January 30th at MGM, I decided I would dedicate this blog to the couples in love that plan on spending a lifetime together. My personal views on marriage are pretty cynical considering I never want to tie the knot, but I’m extremely supportive of those who take the dive including my two friends that recently got in engaged.
How to Get Married
If you Google wedding chapels, Las Vegas, it returns with 1097 results. I’m not quite sure on the exact number Las Vegas holds but in combination of the little chapels, casinos, homes, and various outside locations I can imagine the number is up there. Las Vegas is always ranked in the top ten places to get married and usually within budget. I attended a wedding at the Little Chapels of the Flowers when I first moved here. It was fast, simple, and fun. The bride and groom only had to go down to the Las Vegas Marriage Bureau, pay $60, provide one form of I.D., and head down to the chapel. The Bureau used to be open 24 hours, but now the hours are only from 8:00AM-Midnight; perhaps to prevent all those drunken weddings.
Where to Get Married
Planet Hollywood is the most famous place to get married, being the original location of Elvis’s wedding when the hotel was Aladdin. The ceremony is 8 minutes long and is performed by an Elvis impersonator. Graceland Wedding Chapel is the number one spot for celebrities to get married. It is a free standing chapel and has been around for 50 years.
For an outside wedding, The Grove is a private location and fully customizable for any kind of dream wedding. If you don’t mind driving, Mount Charleston is surrounded by pine trees, and Lake Las Vegas provides beautiful lighting around a lake.
If you are looking for something a little more unique or adventurous, Maverick Helicopter Company offers weddings high above the strip, Vegas Extreme Skydiving lets you wed while you fall, you can drive though at A Special Memory Wedding Chapel, or get married on the pirate ship at T.I.
Everybody is Doing it
Celebrities understand the draw of Sin City and over the years many have come to say “I do.” It dates back to 1943 when pin-up girl/actress Betty Grable married Harry James. Some other names through the years include Rita Hayworth and Dick Haymes, Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow, Mary Tyler Moore and Grant Tinker, Wayne Newton and Elaine Okamura, Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Hurley, Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy, Richard Gere and Cynthia Crawford, Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa, Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra, Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thorton, Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon, and Britney Spears and Jason Allen Alexander. However, even with all these names, perhaps the most famous one was May 1st, 1967 at the once known Aladdin Resort and Casino when Elvis Presley married Priscilla Anne Bealieu.
So if you’re planning on getting married in Las Vegas, your options are endless. If you want to attend the Las Vegas Bridal Expo, you can find out more information at www.lasvegasbride.com. If you have gotten married in Las Vegas, please feel to share your story by commenting on the blog!
