“Sing It for the World”

18 Apr

This week is National Karaoke Week. It’s time I come clean about my secret…I love karaoke. Get a few drinks in me and I rock the mic. I can’t confirm if I am actually good or deaf tone, but I haven’t had any fruit thrown at me… yet. The drunker I am, the more my confidence I become. I only sing a few select artists such as Cher, Bonnie Raitt, and Madonna. Sometimes I’ll try to go out of my vocal range, which ends usually not so pretty. With the ever so popular American Idol, the demand for singers to test out their talent practicing at local karaoke bars.

If you don’t feel like waiting to see if Randy Jackson will say yes or no, you may want to take your chances in the Karaoke World Championships. The closest spot to compete for Las Vegas would be Lake Havasu, AZ on May 6-7 to win the Arizona State Championship. That moves to the Regional Championships in mid-June and July broadcasting on ABC. There is a rumor that the National Championship may be held in Las Vegas in August. Let’s keep our fingers crossed Sin City! The World Championships take place in Ireland during September. If you think you got what it takes to win, you can also compete online. More information can be found on its website, http://www.kwcusa.net/.

If you prefer to stay out of the competition, but still enjoy it, there are some great places to check out in Las Vegas. If you don’t like going up in front of a crowd, check out Karaoke Q Studio in Chinatown. It received the best reviews on Yelp. Grab a group of friends and rent out a room. Q offers half off rooms and drink specials every Thursday. I once went to a private room karaoke room in Toronto. It was super top secret. You had to know the doorman to get it. However, I did question what was really going on in some of those dark rooms.

If you’re visiting Las Vegas, there are great Karaoke places on and near the strip as well. Brand inside of Monte Carlo has karaoke every Tuesday and Thursday. I have a friend that cocktails at Brand and she said karaoke nights are really fun. The music is up-to-date and the DJs interact a lot with crowd. Mcfadden’s also has karaoke on Tuesday. It includes multiple drink specials along with a free drink for anyone who gets up and sings. Ellis Island is short distance from the strip and has karaoke nightly starting at 9 p.m. Ellis has a huge selection of songs and drink prices are cheap so you can get really drunk and sing your lungs out.

There are numerous karaoke bars throughout Las Vegas. I have performed at Champagne Bar, a sick dive bar with legendary karaoke master, Bobby Shawn and Paradise Cantina featuring karaoke every Monday. No matter where you decide to show off your talent there are things to remember. American Pie, Freebird, Stairway to Heaven, etc. are longer than four minutes so pick something else to give other people a chance to sing. Do not “mouth” the mic, the next person up doesn’t want any of your saliva. Try to be respectful of other people, they may suck at singing, but you got to give them props for trying!

Jake's bar off of Sahara and Eastern or Kelley's Pub off Pecos and Tropicana are my favorites. Cheap drinks and a huge selection of songs and awesome K-Djs.
